Kano Govt Urged to End Teenage Rape

KanoChange Organisation Nigeria is calling on the Kano State government to do more to end the crisis of rape of teenage girls in the State.

It is quite disheartening the rate at which cases of rape especially of teenage girls becomes a malaise in our societies.

Cases of rape before now was a crime perpetrated by individuals mostly considered as mentally retarded or better still deranged fellows.

But ironically, now, the tide has changed dramatically. Cases of rape has become a common norm which sometimes the VICTIMS or parents of such victims do not speak out for either fear of ridicule or intimidation by the perpetrators.

However, this monster (RAPE )has reared its ugly face again this time in our beloved state, KANO. Sadly, this time, the case is just so heart-wrenching unlike other rape cases we’ve had in the past.

What made this case of rape so disturbing is because of the multiplier effects it will have on our society as well as our traditional and religious institutions.

Last week,it was discovered that a certain Sub-District Head known in Hausa as DAGACI in DAMBATTA( LGA) RAPED and INFECTED A TEENAGE GIRL WITH HIV.The victim who was about to be married off was asked to go for mandatory HIV test to ascertain her status.

However, when the groom to be discovered she had HIV he raised alarm. When confronted, the teenage girl stated that the DAGACI,(Sub-District Head) and two other adults took turns to rape her.

Why this case is more worrisome is because of the personality involved.
If a high personality in the form of a DAGACI can stoop so low to perpetrate such dastardly act, how then can the society who comprises of his subjects perceive such heinous act?

Traditional and religious institutions are the bedrock of our societies. We look up to them in so many forms either for spiritual, cultural or religious guidance.

To say such crime is perpetrated by a custodian of our culture and traditions is quite appalling.

We at CHANGE ORGANIZATION NIGERIA, condemned such in its entirety this gruesome and inhuman act meted on this innocent and helpless teenage girl.

We call on the Kano Emirate Council and other relevant authorities to be frugal and ensure justice is prevailed.

We must however, commend the swift response of the Kano State Hisba Commission under the watchfull eyes of its DG, Mallam IBRAHIM DAURAWA, who took it upon himself to write the Emirate Council under the able leadership of his Highness Muhammad Sanusi II who ordered the suspension of the DAGACI.

Similarly, we call for an open trial and prosecution of the culprits and other accomplices accordingly. That way it will act as deferent to others. Anything short of this will be resisted by CON
